Bad Web Hosts or Bad Hosting Decisions? Do Your Research

When you decide to launch your own website don't base your decision on which company to choose as a host solely on the monthly charge. Check out the web hosting reviews available on the Internet and decide which web host reviews you think are the most unbiased. As the old saying goes, "you get what you pay for," and if you go for $5 a month hosting you'll get $5 a month worth of satisfaction.

If it's just a site for your family or a blog you will write with no expectations of revenue, then $5 a month is fine, if you can get it. If you want a basic site to sell products you're looking at $9 to $20 a month. If you want to host a number of sites to generate more traffic from the search engines and to sell products online you're looking at $15 to $50 a month, depending on how many options are in the package.

Pay More For E-Commerce Site

If a large e-commerce site is what you have in mind you're probably in the $100 to $200 a month range. At the low end you may encounter start-up companies that disappear as quickly as they blossom. Depending on how the host company sets up its server, your domain may share an IP address with many other websites. If one of those sites gets into trouble it could affect everyone on that IP address. If the misbehaving site goes down, your site could be down too and this could lose you customers. The best bet is to pay a bit more and have your own dedicated IP address.

If you plan to run scripts on your website you have to make sure you have a cgi-bin and mysqi database. With those in place you can run all scripts normally used on a basic to intermediate level site.

Don't Pay Setup Fee

At minimum you should have 100 megabytes of space for your site, at least 10 email forwarding accounts and 10 gigabytes of data transfer per month. Given the competitive nature of the hosting market there's no reason why you can't avoid paying a setup fee. If the company in question plans to charge you for setup, negotiate with them. If they won't budge, move on.
